DEAR THEODOSIA LYRICS
[BURR}
Dear Theodosia, what to say to you?
You have my eyes
You have your mother's name
When you came into the world, you cried and it broke my heart
I'm dedicating every day to you
Domestic life was never quite my style
When you smile, you knock me out, I fall apart
And I thought I was so smart
You will come of age with our young nation
We'll bleed and fight for you, we'll make it right for you
If we lay a strong enough foundation
We'll pass it on to you, we'll give the world to you
And you'll blow us all away
Someday, someday
Yeah, you'll blow us all away
Someday, someday
[HAMILTON]
Oh Philip, when you smile I am undone, my son
Look at my son!
Pride is not the word I'm looking for
There is so much more inside me now
Oh Philip, you outshine the morning sun, my son
When you smile, I fall apart
And I thought I was so smart
[HAMILTON}
My father wasn't around
[BURR]
My father wasn't around
[BOTH]
I swear that I'll be around for you
[HAMILTON]
I'll do whatever it takes
[BURR]
I'll make a million mistakes
[BOTH]
I'll make the world safe and sound for you
Will come of age with our young nation
We'll bleed and fight for you, we'll make it right for you
If we lay a strong enough foundation
We'll pass it on to you, we'll give the world to you
And you'll blow us all away
Someday, someday
Yeah, you'll blow us all away
Someday, someday
THEODOSIA REPRISE LYRICS
Dear Theodosia
How to say to you?
Sometime last night
Your mother breathed your name
And like a flame
That flickers out too soon
She died
She's gone
She dedicated every day to you
She changed my life
She made my life worthwhile
And when you smile
I know a part of her lives on
I know I can go on
You have come of age with our young nation
We bleed and fight for you
Sometimes it seems that's all we do
And you and I will build a strong foundation
And I'll be here for you
The way is clear for you
To blow us all away (some day)
Some day, some day
Blow us all away (some day)
Some day, some day
Blow us all away (some day)
Some day (ooh)
Some day
Blow us all away
Some day
After America wins the Revolutionary War, Aaron Burr and Hamilton sing “Dear Theodosia”, a tender ballad about how much they love their children Theodosia and Phillip, respectively. A soft piano sound plays in the background as Burr begins his solo. He talks about how Theodosia's precious smile and her confused cries make him weak, and admits that he never thought anything, or anyone, could make him feel this way. Burr also mentions that she is named after her mother, a woman who he pines after in the song “Wait for It”. Just as Theodosia will grow and change, so will the nation, and Burr hopes that someday she will be able to blow us all away. As his voice fades, Hamilton begins his solo talking about how proud he is of his new son, Phillip. He shares similar sentiments to Burr as he says that Phillip’s smile makes him fall apart and that he shines brighter than the morning sun.
At this point the piano becomes slightly more pronounced, and the listener can hear the tenderness in Hamilton and Burr’s voices as they transition into their duet. Both of them lacked a supportive father figure in their life, and they swear that they will not let that happen to their children. They will do whatever it takes to make their child happy and make a million mistakes in the process. Hamilton and Burr reiterate that Theodosia and Phillip will come of age just as the nation will, and they hope that they will be able to create a better world. As the two of them sing “blow us all away” once again, they foreshadow the song of the same name where Phillip is killed, adding a darker theme to the otherwise uplifting, emotional song.
The song “Theodosia Reprise” in the Hamildrop series takes on a more serious subject matter. As a dark, melancholy tune plays in the background, Sara Bareilles struggles to explain that Theodosia, Aaron Burr’s wife, has passed away. He reflects on past memories of her, which are laced with pain and sorrow as well as joy. But when his daughter smiles, Burr realizes that Theodosia lives on in her and that he can go on. He goes on to explain how he will create a better world, but there’s an important distinction here: he says that both he and his daughter will build a strong foundation, rather than just him. He will be by her side the entire way, no matter what it takes. This is especially heartbreaking when you consider that Burr was an orphan himself, and now his daughter has to live without a mother. He does not want to subject her to the same traumatic experience that he had, as mentioned later in the song “The World Was Wide Enough”. A chorus of soft voices joins Bareilles here, echoing the phrases "someday" and "blow us all away" until the song eventually fades out.
